pottery dinnerware

When I was a kid, most families I knew served dinner on one of two sets of dinnerware. For everyday family meals, there was one set of pottery dinnerware. For holidays and special occasions, the 'good china' came out of hiding, not to be seen until the next special company dinner. Although I don't think I was a spoiled child, I was always very visual, in the sense that color, shape, texture and designs added appeal to my eye?and this included what food was served on!

My Mom had her set of everyday pottery dinnerware, which, while attractive enough, soon became associated in my mind with all the dishes she served. She was a great cook, but believed that a hearty winter breakfast consisted of hot oatmeal, or, God forbid, 'mush'?that creamy looking substance I have no positive adjectives with which to describe any further. The point is that, when a piece of her to-die-for lemon pie appeared on a plate with the same design as the hearty winter breakfast menu item, I had to simply ignore the plate and focus on the lemon pie.

Perhaps as a result, when I grew up and started my own household, I became a pottery dinnerware collector of the first order. By that time, there were simply more lovely designs of dinnerware than I could afford to buy or find place for in my kitchen. These different sets of dinnerware lent a degree of panache to the humblest of meals. Picture this: a dish of fried rice on a plain white plate versus the self-same fried rice on a cobalt blue pottery plate. See what I mean?

Sometimes a plain white plate is just the thing. For example, a Black Forest cake, with cherries and whipped cream, contrasts beautifully with a white plate. On the other hand, the fried rice already is dominated by white?this dish needs something to set it off.

Pottery dinnerware, whether in a solid color or a multi-colored pattern, should, IMHO, be paired with the food in such a way as to highlight what you're about to eat. How about a big, juicy steak and its inevitable partner, the baked potato? Here, a burnt-orange pottery platter makes the diner feel as though they're in an upscale restaurant, don't you think? Remember, when you're trying to decide whether that burnt orange pottery dinnerware is really a wise purchase, all you need do is think about foods and occasions to which it might be put to good use... Halloween... or the perfect presentation for a chef's salad with prawns and avocado slices? And yes, the Thousand Island will look glorious against that burnt orange plate.

You can see how easy it is to take up the pottery dinnerware collection?dare I say it?hobby? Whether it's tacos or meatloaf, cupcakes or lemon meringue pie, believe me, there's pottery dinnerware out there to elevate that dish to the status of epicurean heaven.
